Definition:

Maternal/Fetal Medicine, also called "perinatology," is a subspecialty within the field of obstetrics and gynecology. Perinatologists complete a fellowship in maternal and fetal medicine after becoming licensed OB/GYNs.

Perinatologists can be primary providers of prenatal care and consult with OB/GYNs in cases of high-risk pregnancy, such as when mothers have a history of stillbirth or when mothers have medical conditions that are associated with a higher risk of pregnancy complications.
