Definition:

A fibroid is a lumps of muscle tissue that grows in the wall of the uterus in some women. Fibroids are not dangerous in most women but can cause problems such as heavy menstrual periods and pain in the pelvic area. In some women, fibroids seem to cause infertility and a tendency toward miscarriage.

Fibroids fall into one of four categories based on the location of the growth:

  • Intramural - in the wall of the uterus
  • Subserous - in the outer wall of the uterus
  • Submucous - in the muscle beneath the uterine lining
  • Cervical - growing in the cervix
Also Known As: Leiomyoma, fibromyoma, myoma
Alternate Spellings: Uterine fibroids
Common Misspellings: Fiberoids
