Definition:
Of or related to the female parent. In terms of reproductive biology, maternal can be used to describe any factor attributable to, or inherited from the mother of a baby.
Examples:
- Maternal age – the mother’s age
- Maternal risk factor – a risk factor only found in the mother
- Maternal grandparents – the mother’s parents
- Maternal chromosome – a chromosome inherited from the mother
