Definition:

A hormone involved in women's menstrual cycles.

Progesterone levels increase in the second half of the menstrual cycle, after ovulation, and usually remain high if the woman gets pregnant. Progesterone helps to maintain the lining of the uterus in order to support a pregnancy.
