Definition:

The birth of a baby before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Very early preterm delivery, such as before 24 weeks of pregnancy, is associated with poor odds of survival for the baby and high risk of neonatal death. Preterm infants born after 24 weeks can often survive, but these babies face increased risk of long-term health complications.
