A deviation from the normal round or oval shaped placenta. A multilobed placenta may have two or more lobes (bilobed placenta) or may involve an extra "accessory" placenta attached to the main placenta (a succenturiate placenta). On its own, a multilobed placenta is not necessarily dangerous but it can increase the risk of serious complications such as vasa previa. Multi-lobed placentas also may not separate fully from the uterus after delivery of the baby, leading to complications for the mother.
