Factor V Leiden (FVL)

Definition:

A common genetic mutation that causes increased risk of blood clots, which can increase risk of pregnancy loss. Evidence is strongest of an association with miscarriages after 10 weeks. Factor V Leiden falls in the category of hereditary thrombophilias.

In the United States, about 5% of Caucasians have the Factor V Leiden mutation but its incidence is lower in minorities.
