Definition:

Of or related to the male parent. In terms of reproductive biology, paternal can be used to describe any factor attributable to, or inherited from the father of a baby.

Examples:
  • Paternal age – the father’s age
  • Paternal risk factor – a risk factor only found in the father
  • Paternal aunt – the father’s sister
  • Paternal chromosome – a chromosome inherited from the father
