Although a December study found that aspirin and heparin were not helpful for moms with unexplained recurrent miscarriages, a recent article in Rheumatology Update reports that researchers have reaffirmed that this treatment does really work for women with antiphospholipid syndrome.
Antiphospholipid syndrome is a usually silent disorder in which the body develops antibodies against components of blood cells, leading to an increased tendency to build small blood clots that interfere with the placenta's development. Heparin and aspirin have long been used as treatment for antiphospholipid syndrome, leading to improved odds of successful pregnancy for affected women. It's not yet clear exactly why the treatment works.
