Swine Flu and Risk of Miscarriage

Saturday May 2, 2009

Everyone's talking about swine flu (a.k.a. H1N1) virus right now, which seems to be spreading around the world rather quickly. If you're currently pregnant, it's natural and wise to be concerned and careful. Pregnant women are at higher risk than the rest of the population to have complications from many infections, and flu is no different. No one knows for sure whether this flu will increase the risk of miscarriage, but in general, even regular flu has been linked to neurological complications and other issues in babies born to mothers who had the flu during pregnancy. Obviously it makes sense to take extra precautions to protect yourself if you are currently pregnant or trying to become pregnant, but you probably already knew that.

Here are some resources for how to reduce your odds of catching any kind of flu -- and if you have any suspicion that you might have swine flu and are currently pregnant, contact your physician immediately to discuss whether you need antiviral treatments and/or fever reducers.

and if you never were told to look at the federal pandemicflu.gov website that has been up since Oct. 2005 when PanFlu Alert started, “warning” – not that what is said in the, ‘Plan and Prepare’ pages was ever a PSA, though it’s the gravest threat our nation has ever faced- of disruptions to local services expected during the worst of Pandemic, and, that govt cannot and will not meet all your needs; (that is your responsibility)

use a site emergency managers in a county in Idaho put up to help families get prepared at home now; in case schools or some workplaces have to be closed this fall or Winter (as they should already have been done for up to 4 weeks to reduce infections during local peaks, since “swine flu”: (Pandemic Firstwave) is at least as deadly as the 1957 panflu, but,
putting in hospital or killing the young/healthy workers/pregnant ages, the, “Spanish Flu” did 91 years ago.

12-week, “social distancing” measures were, “planned-on-paper” for how deadly this “flu” is to some age groups (Cat. 5).

Any ammount of preparation on your part helps you not be part of the problem;
“better safe than sorry”.

I had the swine flu a couple of weeks ago and recently (last week) suffered a miscarriage. I was 8 weeks pregnant. I had a high fever at one point, and we tried to keep my fever down with medication. I don’t know if it had anything to do with my miscarriage, of course it could have been anything. But I’d never had a miscarriage before. I can’t help but wonder if the swine flu had something to do with my loss. Please be careful if you are expecting. Early in pregnancy, it could pose a risk to your baby, and later on in pregnancy they are saying it can pose a risk to the mother and child. Stay safe!

I believe I had H1N1 over 2 1/2 weeks ago (fever, aches, headache, cough, sore throat, chills) the worst flu like symptoms I have ever had…I still have a slight cough and aches. Went to the Doctor 3 days ago for my 8 week pregnancy appt (and first dr appt) and found out our baby had no heartbeat…I had miscarried. I just recvd my blood work and it shows I have an elevated white blood count (Neutrophils) and Low Lymphocytes count. I have to believe that this virus contributed in someway to my miscarriage. Stay Healthy!!!!

I had the swine flu and miscarried at 8 weeks – approximately three days after my symptoms started. I had a high fever and took Tamiflu, which may have contributed. Best advice is get immunized before you get pregnant.

I was diagnosed with H1N1 4 days ago and was prescribed Tamiflu, I found out on October 22nd that I had a miscarriage. I was 8 weeks along. We heard the heartbeat at 6 weeks so we know it was there. I really believe after much research H1N1 contributed to my loss and many other womens. I am sorry for anyone else who has experienced the loss of a child.

I had the H1N1 virus and was ill for about 6 days during my 5th week of pregnancy. My temperature did not go above 100.8 degrees F. During a vaginal ultrasound at my 8 week prenatal visit there was no heartbeat. I am scheduled for a D & C tomorrow.

My five year old son was diagnosed and hospitalized for uncontrolable fever with swine flu. He is now home and better, but I am having severe symptoms in my chest, I have asthma and am 8 weeks pregnant. I went to the doctor yesterday and he thinks I am miscarring due to my hcg levels stopped climbing within the last four days. I have five healthy children and have never miscarried before. I wish there was something that could be done with this nasty flu and what it is doing to so many people alive and still in the womb trying to have life.

I got the h1n1 on Saturday and miscarried around wednesday. I was 11 weeks and 5 days. I went for an ultrasound today (12 weeks) and there was no heartbeat so I get a D&C on Monday. I am devastated I didn’t get the shot in time and worse, I didn’t think I needed it. I had no idea there was a connection to miscarriage. I knew they said for pregnant woman but I assumed I was strong and would fight it off. I feel so stupid now.

I heard a healthy heartbeat at 6 weeks and 6 days. My son got the live virus nasal vaccine when I was 7 weeks and 3 days. THey told me that the mist was a live virus and to wash his and my hands if he touches his nose. We were cautious but maybe not enough? They said it was such a small chance I could catch it from him. I started to miscarry the next night and had no heartbeat two days later. I now have the flu 6 days after my son’s vaccine. High fever, chills, cough, raspy voice, achy and headache. I now want to confirm that I do indeed have H1N1 vs the regular flu, but please be careful if you are pregnant and perhaps have someone else take your child to get vaccinated. Of course it is important to get them vaccinated since if they caught it you could catch it too

I started to feel unwell on fri 30th oct, on sun 1st nov my partner phoned the ’swine flu’ line, they told him i didn’t have swine flu as my temp wasn’t high enough, the next day (mon) i went for a scan as i had had a slight brown discharge before & as i felt so unwel i wanted to make sure that all was ok, the scan showed all was well :-) a huge relief, baby measured 8wks & 2days, i was even given scan pictures as ‘living proof’. The following day i was feeling worse than ever, still had a stomping headache, phlem on my chest & a temp, as the morning passed i got worse, i was struggling to breathe properly & my temp had gone upto 39.6 my partner got on the phone to the swine flu line again & surprise…now i have suspected ’swine flu’, he had to phone my G.P who said i must take the ‘Tamiflu’, i was really upset about takin it as i had heard that your not meant to take it if pregnant, my partner tried getting more advice, but no luck! eventually he spoke to someone on the ’swine flu’ helpling again, this time they gave an authorisation code for ‘Relenza’ this is what pregnant women should take. Confused by all this he contacted my G.P to explain about myself taking the ‘Relenza’ instead, but, she was specific to state that i must take the ‘Tamiflu’ as the ‘Relenza’ wouldn’t work! I started takin the ‘Tamiflu’ that evening, the following day a doctor had to come out & prescribe antibiotics for bronchitis. On friday i had a very slight Blood streaked discharge, this worried me very much, but thought maybe is was because of all my coughing, this happened a few times. I went to my doctor on monday 9th as my cough wasn’t improving much, i was then diagnosed with ‘pneumonia’ & put on different antibioics. On tues 10th Nov, i was able to have another scan to mind my mind at rest. It was devastating news, my little baby which was happily growing only the week before was no longer, my baby had stopped growing at 8weeks 6days, that is 4 days after the scan before i took Tamiflu & 2-3 days ater starting the ‘Tamiflu’. All to much of a convenience, i really beleive it was the ‘Tamiflu’ & or illness. I have since had to deal with a miscarriage which i ended up in Theatre as i was bleeding too much. Could this have been avoided? If i wasn’t told i DID NOT have ‘Swine flu’ when my partner first phoned, or if i had NOT taken that ‘Tamiflu’!! I truly hope that no more pregnant women have to go through this. I am going to insist on being Vaccinated against a 2nd hit of swine flu (which i was told could happen) as i will try for another baby, but NOT until i’ve been vaccinated, i DO NOT want to go through this again! All the very bset to all pregnant women or those planning for a baby. xxxx

My 2-year old son had swine flu in July when I was 10 weeks pregnant. I miscarried the same week. I became pregnant again and at 8 weeks I contracted flu (not tested for swine flu) and miscarried again that same week. I just don’t believe both miscarriages were a coincidence.

(25) Jessi says:

I started getting flu symptoms on Nov. 9th. That same day I went to my OB and had an ultrasound that was normal. I was not tested for H1N1 until four days later on Nov. 12th and since I had not gotten better. That same day I was tested they prescriped a Azythromicin just in case it was an infection until the H1N1 results came back. On Nov. 17, five days I was tested for H1N1, the doctor called saying the test had come back positive for H1N1. That same day they started me on Tamiflu. The next day, Nov. 18, I wasn’t feeling any better so the doctor to me to go to ER at Hospital where he was going to admit me into Hospital because they suspected I might be developing serious respiratory complications. They decided to do a chest Xray to check my lungs and an ultrasound to see that baby was fine. When they did the ultrasound there was NO heatbeat.

I have one child and have never gone through any complications or miscarraigers before. I can’t help but believe that there is some link between my miscarraige and the fact that I had H1N1. Too much of a coincidence that my ultrasound and baby were fine the day I began with the H1N1 symptoms and then 9 days later I have a miscarraige.

My advice to all is the following:
1. Get the H1N1 vaccine
2. If you have flu symptoms insist that your doctor test you for both types of flu right away and not just the rapid test (which the hospital says that is inaccurate because they are getting about 40% false negatives) but make sure they send it to a lab to have the test really examined
3. If your really feel like you have flu symptoms, don’t wait to start Tamiflu until you get your results back from lab (which in my case took 5 days) but insist that your doctor start you on Tamiflu right away in the 24-48 hr period that it is the most effective.

I truly believe that there was connection between my miscarraige and the fact that I had H1N1.

i also had swine flu like symptoms the doctor put me on tamiful at 14 weeks! found out friday at 17 weeks there was no heartbeat! when they did the sonogram my son was only measuring 14 weeks ..i believe with my whole heart there is a link between this drug and miscarriages .. my heart goes out to all that have lost a baby

I had H1N1 in June. I didn’t know i was pregnant but found out one week after the flu symptoms began. My symptoms became worse – the flu went away and came back. I had severe coughing to the point of vomiting. i was put on antibiotics (2 rounds) to try and rid my body of the cough. I have never felt as sick. I miscarried my baby at 6 weeks pregnant – it had no heartbeat and I went in for a D&C. The doctor said it was likely the virus that caused the miscarriage. My body was too intent on saving me and I had nothing left to help the baby survive. I have 3 children and have never had any miscarriages or fertility issues prior to this. We were devastated. 4th child or not, unexpected or not, we loved it.

I am so grateful to have found this discussion. I contracted swine flu in July, just as I had found out I was pregnant. I can safely say I have never been so poorly. High temp, sickness, aches and pains. I was in bed for a week and lost a stone in weight. I new this wasn’t good for my baby and had so much anxiety due to this worry I was almost having panic attacks. I took Relenza and regretted every dose, worrying that it would do more harm than good. At 9 weeks i sensed that something was not right with the pregnancy and went for a private scan. Sadly I was right and found my baby had died at around the time I book the appointment (8 weeks 5 days) I was and still am devastated. I’ve had 2 healthy pregnancies and no fertility issues. I firmly believe that the swine flu I suffered caused me to miscarry. It was a missed miscariage, i had no bleeding or cramps. I would encourage all mothers to go with their gut instinct. Until this happened I didn’t know it was possible to feel so sad. I opted for the D&C and even that didn’t go smoothly. I had to have 2 ops and much pain before it was completed. I really do feel for all the women who have posted on this discussion. I feel so thankful that you have bravely shared your stories.

(31) Marian Nelson says:

This season I have received both vaccinations. I got my H1N1 vaccination on Nov the 5th. I was at that time 20 weeks along. It is now Nov 28 (I’m a little over 23 weeks now) and my little boy is alive and healthy. This is my 3rd pregnancy and so far so good. I feel so sad for all the miscarriages that have occurred. I can safely say I would get the vaccine all over again. Had I been less then 20 weeks maybe I could have miscarried. But had I also gotten the H1N1 flu I also could have miscarried then.
(my other 2 pregnancies were also successful)

Unfortunately the H1N1 vaccine has some risks; latest reports show 28 US pregnant women have died and there have been many miscarriages. I have written an article on how difficult it is to get pregnant after a miscarriage. Please see this site for more information: http://www.squidoo.com/getting-pregnant-after-miscarriage-your-helpful-guide

The key is to conquer the grief (see how I did it), then check out a natural approach which focuses on building up the condition of your body. From experience I know ovulation is almost unpredictable. Best to you.

i had H1N1 in early November. I did not know at the time that i was 3 weeks pregnant. I had taken Tamiflu for 5 days. The next week i found out i was pregnant and when i went in at 6 weeks, there was a heartbeat on my ultrasound. Everything looked fine but i couldnt help but worry because i had been spotting for weeks. they told me it was normal but still i was uneasy.I went in with heavy bleeding to the ER and the ultrasound done at my OB said that there was no heartbeat and the baby hadnt developed from a week ago. this week i miscarried and had a D&C done. i firmly believe that either the swine flu or the tamiflu caused my miscarriage! Good luck to all pregnant women struggling with the same issue!
