Can a Cold or Flu Cause a Miscarriage?

By May 25, 2008

Winter may be over, but people catch viral infections year-round, and many people wonder whether getting sick during pregnancy can cause a miscarriage.

Some illnesses are indeed linked to increased risk of miscarriage, such as rubella and certain types of food poisoning. In general, the common cold and even the flu aren't that likely to contribute to a pregnancy loss. No study has ever found conclusive evidence of a link, and although some have wondered whether a fever might cause miscarriage, that link has never been proven either.
